In 2006 I was running a bar that most nights exploded with psy-trance parties: five hundred people sweating, shouting, and watching the DJ while waves of bass shook their bodies. To decorate the courtyard we hung sheer fabrics studded with oversized “sequins”—plastic discs about seven centimeters across—fixed in place with a tag gun. When the party ended, I took the installation down, folded it up still drenched in smoke and beer, and stored it in a shoebox. Eighteen years later, amid my compulsive yet orderly hoarding, I rediscovered that box in storage. The moment I opened it, a cloud of dust rained out; seeing it, I felt the same spark I’d felt that night.

I decided to wash the discs one by one. Water restored their original colors—silver, gold, acid yellows, turquoises, violets—and, above all, their potential to vibrate again. I considered covering a wall with them, sewing them together, laminating them… but the idea that stuck was to staple them onto an old hollow-core door I had at hand. That’s where Against Frivolity was born.
