Description

I wanted to tell the story of running the New York marathon through portraits of the people who run it. I set up a black backdrop outside in Central Park and we pulled people to pose for me as soon as they crossed the finish line. I ended up photographing 100 runners - everyone from the winners, to a blind runner who ran with guides leading the way, to people who finished in 9 hours. The result ended up being a tableau of the elation, delirium, grit, love, glory, physical exhaustion, and joy of running a marathon. The images ran in Sports Illustrated and to this day are still among my favorite bodies of work.
