Sofia Crespo (Argentine, b. 1991) is an artist who uses artificial intelligence to explore how organic life evolves and simulates itself.,Working first with convolutional neural networks and then generative adversarial networks, she produces speculative, biology-inspired imagery grounded in the visual language of natural history illustration.,
Crespo began experimenting with AI around 2017, and by 2018 was using convolutional neural networks to extract and rearrange textures before turning to GANs.,Her 2018 series Neural Zoo recombined natural forms into an imagined nature that only computer vision could produce.,It was through Neural Zoo that she met the Norwegian artist Feileacan Kirkbride McCormick, and in 2020 the two formed the duo Entangled Others.,
As Entangled Others, the pair trained a neural network on roughly three million images spanning ten thousand species to imagine Critically Extant (2022), a speculative recreation of endangered species designed to expose how little of the natural world is captured in open datasets.,The work was shown across 96 screens in Times Square, New York.Since 2020 the duo has also developed Artificial Natural History, an ongoing book and fine-art print project styled as a natural history book that never was.
In 2022 the Buffalo AKG Art Museum acquired Entangled Others' Swim for its permanent collection.In 2024 Casa Batlló invited Crespo to create Structures of Being, a projection mapping onto the building's facade drawing on the natural forms found in Antoni Gaudí's architecture.,Her 2026 solo exhibition “Liquid Chimeras” at the MEET Digital Culture Center in Milan, Entangled Others' first solo exhibition in Europe, grew out of a STUDIOTOPIA residency collaboration with oceanographer Joan Llort and centered on the Liquid Strata: Argomorphs sculptures, hybrid life forms imagined from failed ocean-monitoring instruments.Crespo has received the AI Newcomer Award from the German Informatics Society and lectured at MIT and the Oxford Artificial Intelligence Society.
