Sean Mundy (Canadian, b. 1991) is a photographer and digital artist based in Montréal who builds conceptual imagery from photography and digital manipulation.,Working through the surreal and the symbolic while staying rooted in reality, he constructs austere, tense scenes that explore division, isolation and the tension between the individual and collective systems.,,
Mundy began photographing with a Polaroid digital camera his parents gave him for a high school trip, and started shooting seriously around 2013 and 2014.,He connected with other young photographers through 52-week photo projects shared on Flickr and Tumblr, eventually meeting many of them in person at week-long gatherings of up to forty people, where they lived and worked together. Raised Catholic but no longer religious, he continues to draw on religious iconography in his images, treating it as a social construct whose symbols remain widely legible in Western culture.
Starting in 2016 he worked with Montreal's Galerie Youn and other galleries, including Yellow Frame Gallery in Tel Aviv and Mortal Machine Gallery in New Orleans.His first solo exhibition, Hollow, opened at Never Apart in Montreal after two years of shooting, a series in which strict compositional rules link the images into a single dialogue about ritualistic behaviour and the contradictions of power in contemporary society.
Mundy entered the NFT space in early 2021, after seeing local 3D artists such as FVCKRENDER and Aeforia tokenizing work in late 2020 and noticing that almost no photography was represented. The photographer Nate Hill introduced him to SuperRare, where he was accepted just before the 2021 boom and released his first NFT, Barriers IV (Video), in late January 2021. In July 2022 he sold Sigil for 7 ETH on SuperRare, the highest price his work had reached at that point.
