Michelle Thompson (British, b. 1972) is an illustrator and collage artist who merges analogue collage with digital illustration, building layered compositions from archival photographs, typography, distressed textures and found imagery. She discovered collage during her Master's at the Royal College of Art through the work of Joseph Beuys, Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Motherwell, after a First Class degree in Illustration from Norwich School of Art.,
Her work draws on a personal archive of vintage magazines built up over more than 25 years, and centres on memory, performance and the continuous reconstruction of identity through images. “A ripped photograph from the 1950s can suddenly feel very current when placed next to something political, uncomfortable, or culturally familiar”, she has said, arguing that recurring social obsessions around youth, desirability and self-presentation repeat across decades. Faces in her collages are often obscured, cropped or interrupted, reflecting her interest in “what people hide, what they project, and how identity is constructed visually”. The recurring use of bold red text on black-and-white imagery in works such as Who Wants To Look Young and My butcher and I agree... recalls the visual strategies of Barbara Kruger, though Thompson's collages read as less declarative and more psychologically unstable.
Alongside her personal work, Thompson has produced editorial illustration for The Guardian, the Financial Times, The Observer, Channel 4 and The New York Times, among other outlets, allowing commercial and personal projects to feed into one another.,Unused editorial sketches often reappear in later artworks, and fragments of older collages are recycled as textural layers. In 2021, market commentary on crypto art named her among independent artists producing one-of-one or small-edition pieces. She has since begun minting selected editorial pieces as well, including a working drawing made for The Observer.Career highlights include a billboard campaign for Channel 4's Deceit, digital artwork displayed in Times Square in New York, and poster art for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.
She exhibits at art fairs in London, Hong Kong, New York and across Europe, and shows regularly at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. In 2026 the Fry Art Gallery presented “Papercuts”, a solo retrospective spanning three decades of her collage and illustration work. Her digital collage Hybrid was featured on the platform Fakewhale in 2024, and her work has since appeared in the Fakewhale group exhibition “ART MARKET: The State of Digital Humanism” on Foundation.,The artist Rebecca Rose has named Thompson, who works in vintage collage, among the artists who have inspired her own practice.
