Martin Lukas Ostachowski, known as MLO, is a multidisciplinary artist and crypto art historian whose work explores the visual language of clouds as a metaphor for blockchain and digital impermanence.Born in Poland and raised and educated in Germany,he is based in Montrealand has tokenized artwork since the spring of 2018.
Trained originally as a painter working in weaving and sculpture,he began exploring digital practice and blockchain technology in 2018,,eventually pursuing a PhD at the University of Zurich documenting the history of crypto art.His scholarship has been published in the journal Leonardo (MIT Press),and in 2019 he contributed to the co-authored position paper “Crypto Art: A Decentralized View”, alongside data scientists, art historians, collectors, gallerists and the artist Hackatao.His doctoral research aims to recontextualize crypto art within the history of contemporary art, distinguishing it from blockchain art and NFTs more broadly.
Between 2018 and 2020, his installation Tokenized Cloud Spheres, twelve photo collages made from clouds photographed on passenger flights across North America, linked archival prints to digital animations through the augmented reality app Artivive. It was shown at venues including the “Contemporary Photography” show at the CICA Museum in South Korea and his solo exhibition “Tropopause Contemplation” in Sherbrooke, Quebec.The archival prints were limited to editions of five, a format he has used for select collections.,In 2022, he contributed the installation Cumulonimbus Murus to “DYOR”, one of the first institutional exhibitions on crypto art, held at Kunsthalle Zürich, where he was described as a historian of the field.
In 2023, he released Noctilucent Mementi, a 210-piece generative series marking five years of making generative clouds and named for the highest, largely invisible clouds on Earth, visible only when the sun is several degrees below the horizon. Released through Sovrn.art, the full edition sold out within 24 hours.One work from the series, Noctilucent Memento #142, later entered the collection of the Museum Francisco Carolinum in Linz, Austria.
In 2026, he introduced Do Not Accumulate, a 42-edition series imagining a future in which physical cash has been replaced by programmable central bank digital currencies.The series debuted with two Bitcoin-inscribed works, Digital EUR and Digital USD, each issued in 21 editions and programmed to lose value monthly over a 21-month cycle, a reference to Bitcoin's 21 million coin supply.,In June 2026, he also exhibited at NFC Summit 2026 in Lisbon.
