Krist Wood is an artist who explores networks, memory and the internet's early visual culture.,His work combines dreamlike, half-remembered imagery with visuals gathered from the internet, producing collages that mix fantasy and reality. Much of his work unfolds through his personal website, which itself operates as a larger, ever-changing web artwork.
Wood's academic background is in molecular, cellular and developmental biology. His PhD research at Yale University involved the genetic engineering of nanomotors, molecular devices capable of converting energy into movement.He believes sleep is an ideal moment for recollecting memories. He draws on vivid or blurred projections of past events tied to a specific place's colours, contours, surfaces or atmosphere.
His piece Mausoleum recreates his experience surfing GeoCities, which he has described as “quiet and unnerving and fascinating”.In 2011 Rhizome published a profile of his work.His self-portrait A Yearling Withdrawn, an edition of one plus one artist's proof, is hidden inside his website behind a link concealed in an image of a sleeping fawn.It was originally shown on Computers Club, the net art collective of which Wood is a member alongside artists including Petra Cortright, Rafael Rozendaal, Sara Ludy and Nicolas Sassoon.,In 2022 he showed work as part of Refraction's Miami Art Week exhibition, curated by Dina Chang and Malcolm Levy.
