Josie Bellini is a multimedia artist and designer who came to crypto art from a background in finance, working across painting, print and fully on-chain digital collections that explore Bitcoin's history and the ethics of digital permanence. She began making crypto art in 2017 with Genesis, and in 2021 released CyberBrokers, one of the first fully on-chain avatar collections, comprising 10,001 characters stored entirely on the Ethereum blockchain.,
In 2019 she made The People, a print of a woman whose face is spray-painted with the words “We Are Satoshi”, alongside portraits of Bitcoin's early contributors cut from dollar bills. That year she also painted Out of Many, One, a two-panel work on wood combining acrylic, US dollars and pages of the Bitcoin whitepaper. She released Free Ross, a print whose profits went to Ross Ulbricht through freeross.org.In 2020 she painted Hal, a tribute to the Bitcoin developer Hal Finney approved by his wife, Fran Finney, and the first work in a planned series on the history of Bitcoin. Half of its proceeds went to Finney's ALS Association chapter. In November 2020 she contributed one of the surrounding figures to First Supper, a collaborative piece minted on Async Art in which thirteen artists, including Hackatao, Matt Kane and XCOPY, each rendered one layer of a scene modeled on the Last Supper.
She has described storing CyberBrokers entirely on the Ethereum blockchain, at a cost of roughly 100 ETH in upload fees, as an ethical choice rather than a practical one, made so the community around the collection could not lose the work if a server went offline. She named all 10,001 characters herself and wrote twenty-six chapters of accompanying story for the collection. Her following project, Drifters, moved to fully 3D, interoperable avatars, made in collaboration with artists including Brian Brinkman, Coldy, Osanachi, XCOPY and Banana Ken.In 2022 her work appeared in “DYOR”, an exhibition on the history of crypto art at Kunsthalle Zürich, as part of its 24 Seeders installation profiling pioneering artists and platforms, alongside Botto, Matt Kane, Hackatao and XCOPY.
