Goyong is a Seoul-based digital artist who fuses painting and animation to explore what he calls the “conquest of dimensions”.He uses pixelation to render fragmented cityscapes and other everyday scenes. He works under a pseudonym, saying the artist Goyong “didn't exist before the advent of Web3” and represents another version of himself.
He majored in sculpture in college, drawn to the medium because it let him express his ideas quickly, and came to prefer working with metal. He sold his first piece, a metal turtle, after a student exhibition. After deciding to become a full-time artist, he discovered NFTs and chose to work with animation and pixels rather than painting on canvas. He has cited Andy Warhol's philosophy of the “art factory” as a formative influence on how he thinks about making and repeating work.
In works such as City, The Flowers, and Seoul, he renders cityscapes and nature scenes as pixelated grids, using the fragmentation to evoke the mediated, screen-based nature of contemporary experience. He writes his own code for these animated works, describing his process as directly experiencing the data and operating rules inside the monitor.
Goyong became a SuperRare artist and exhibited at Art Innovation in Miami Beach during Art Basel in 2022.In 2024 he was one of three inaugural residents of AOTM's “Artists in Residence I”, alongside Amaan Jahangir and Rebecca Rose, with the residency's curated sale opening in May 2024.For the residency he produced Lava, depicting a volcanic eruption destroying the surrounding environment and endangering the mountain goats that live there, a departure from the warmer, calmer palette of his earlier work. That year he also contributed artwork to the Memes by 6529 project.
