Francoise Gamma (Canadian, b. 1988) is a Barcelona-based artist who uses the internet and the animated GIF format to draw contorted, mutated bodies built from single-pixel lines. He has worked on the internet since 1995 and created some of his earliest GIF art on Hell.com in 2001. A member of the online collective Computers Club, he draws on formal training in anatomy and technical drawing that he began in 2003.
He joined Computers Club in 2009 at the founders' invitation, around the time he completed Videogram, a project that marked a deeper turn toward digital art. He works mostly with obsolete browsers, operating systems and abandonware, using these constraints to create commentary on fractured identity and archetypes. In his earlier work he limited his GIFs to fewer frames, treating the format's technical limits as a way to explore complexities other media could not reach.
