Dominikus Baur is a generative artist who codes two-dimensional digital drawings using raw JavaScript and the Canvas API, some pieces layering in a three-dimensional effect.,In his series The Inner World, each piece grows from one or more circular cores that spawn branching tendrils standing in for a person's thoughts and emotions.
In 2022 Baur released a set of generative works minted on Foundation, each paired with a hand-plotted A5 drawing and a signed fine art print of the same image, among them Outside, Looking In and Her Hands like Ashen Snowfall.That year his work was included in “PHYGITAL”, a Kate Vass Galerie group show pairing eight contemporary generative artists with early computer-art drawings by Hans Dehlinger and Harold Cohen.,The show later reopened as a virtual installation on OnCyber curated by fellow participant Gordon Berger.
Baur's data visualization projects date back to at least 2014, several years before his 2022 generative art releases.,In 2014 he was one of several contributors, alongside Lev Manovich, to Selfiecity, an interactive study of 3,200 Instagram selfie photos.His project On Broadway, a data-driven portrait of New York's Broadway, premiered at the New York Public Library's Public Eye exhibition and was later shown in Shanghai, Riga and Amsterdam. It won a Silver award at the 2015 Kantar Information is Beautiful Awards.A later analysis of title drops across 73,921 films, made with Alice Thudt using subtitle data from OpenSubtitles.com, reached the top spot on Hacker News.,
