David OReilly is an Irish multidisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles, working across animation, video games and interactive art.,He began his career as an animator, making short films that helped spark a wave of lo-fi digital aesthetics. In collaboration with the filmmaker Spike Jonze, he created the holographic video games featured in the film Her.
He also developed the video games Mountain and Everything, the latter released in 2017 and built to let players embody every scale of existence, from subatomic particles to the cosmos.,Everything incorporates recordings of the philosopher Alan Watts's lectures and shifts into a self-generating mode when left untouched by the player.
His early short films include The External World (2010) and Octocat Adventures (2008), both screened as part of animation programs at institutions including Tate Modern and the Museum of Arts and Design.,
In 2022 he released ORBSKETCHES.mp4 on Feral File as part of the exhibition “Simulation Sketchbook: Works in Process”, an edition of 100 minted on Tezos. The video is built around an orb avatar he has used since 2019, generated from math experiments with live camera input.His augmented-reality works have been viewed more than 3 billion times across social media.
