Bård Ionson is a digital artist whose work combines artificial intelligence, GAN-based image generation and analog processes such as VCRs, CRTs, oscilloscopes, lasers and scanners to blur the lines between the physical, electronic, digital and spiritual worlds.He has made art since 2012 and began minting on the blockchain in 2018, favoring a cohesion of color over form in which edges blend and objects meld while subjects stay recognizable.,
His SAGE Anomaly series merges generative art with a narrative involving aliens, radar technology and degenerative Alzheimer's disease unfolding across decades.Representation of the Entity (v.4) from that series entered the Museum of Crypto Art's Genesis Collection, and his work Battledore is held in the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford.,In 2022 he appeared in “24 Seeders”, part of the “DYOR” exhibition at Kunsthalle Zürich, within a panel dedicated to the artist Matt Kane alongside artists including Coldie, Hackatao and XCOPY.
The Simulation Trilogy opened with Painting with Fire: A History in GANs and continued with Bones In The Sky (Marfa), which premiered at Art Blocks Weekend in Marfa, Texas, amid the town's skeletal desert landscapes.The trilogy concluded with Balloons In The Sky by Bård & Jennifer Ionson, created with the artist Jennifer Ionson and premiered at HASH Gallery during NFC Summit 2026 in Lisbon.For the piece, Jennifer Ionson photographed the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta on 3,000 digital frames while Bård Ionson shot 700 frames of 35mm half-frame film, training a custom StyleGAN model that generates a non-repeating stream of balloon imagery on a 75-inch screen.Pressing a button on the installation freezes the stream, mints a one-of-one NFT on the Ethereum mainnet and prints an archival copy on site, while a full acquisition of the installation redirects 45 percent of future mint revenue to its new owner as a stewardship fund and 45 percent to the artist as an ongoing royalty.In 2026 he also paired with the artist Osinachi for Hash Gallery's inaugural Double Take release, contributing the work Fire And Bone alongside Osinachi's Kinship.Each of the 200 works in Painting with Fire carries a Historic Event trait tying it to an entry on a GAN timeline Ionson compiled while researching the collection, reading in sequence as a chronology of the technique from 2014 to 2023; its Alternate Fires has entered the permanent collection of the Francisco Carolinum museum in Linz.
