0xphiiil is the pseudonym of Philippe Caya, a visual artist who works across generative algorithms, pen plotters and traditional painting, and lives in Montreal, Canada. His generative sculptures and animations explore themes of relationships, complementarity and conflict, and have been released on platforms including Art Blocks, fxhash and Prohibition.art.
Caya first exhibited geometric abstraction in solo shows at Soucoupe in Montreal, including “Nonagon” in 2016 and “Duochromes” in 2017, before moving into generative art. He released the generative series Zupermat on Art Blocks in May 2022, an infinite documentary on the life of pseudo-random rectangular cuboids that sometimes examines their construction and other times portrays their organization as “gangs, mob and anarcho-secret societies”.He discussed the project's coding process on Art Blocks' Behind the Code series that August.,The same year, Caya collaborated with the Indonesia-based artist Ciput on Freehand.
In March 2023 he launched Beginnings, a generative series with a physical component released on Plottables.io: each mint could be claimed as a signed, plotted work, with collectors in Texas, New York, California, South Africa, Turkey and Spain receiving prints. A solo show of sixteen hand-drawn Beginnings works opened that same month at Va Savoir Gallery in Montreal. That April, his work appeared in “Beyond Physicality”, a mixed-reality pop-up at Chinatown Soup in New York organized by the dArt collective, alongside fellow Art Blocks artists Darien Brito, Aaron Penne and Boreta. On Art Blocks that July, he released Couleur Nouvelle, a fixed edition of 360 works that invents new, almost-recognizable color names through a vowel-replacement algorithm applied in both English and French. In September 2023 he presented the generative sculpture Stormae at an Art Blocks Activations event in Marfa, Texas, letting viewers generate a new augmented-reality sculpture with each click. He released the solo series Cloud Patina on Prohibition.art in January 2024, depicting the variability of imagined recycled metal plates awaiting reuse in a recycling facility.
