Description

The wunderkammer, or cabinet of curiosities, originated in the Renaissance and Baroque periods in Europe. These cabinets were private collections of rare and exotic objects, including natural specimens, antiquities and works of art, and scientific instruments. Men played a central role in the history of wunderkammers, as they were typically the wealthy collectors, scholars, or nobles who assembled and displayed these eclectic collections. These cabinets served as early precursors to museums and reflected the interests of the time, often reinforcing a patriarchal perspective on knowledge and authority.

Wunderkammer is a creative exploration that reimagines the historical male-dominated tradition of cabinets of curiosities by infusing it with the influences of iconic female artists. Collaborating with artificial intelligence, I envision a world where women played a central role in shaping these intriguing cabinets. Inspired by artists such as Hilma af Klint, Anni Albers, and Sonia Delaunay, Wunderkammer generates a series of unique digital cabinets inspired by the distinct styles of these women. In doing so, the project subverts the traditional wunderkammer, highlighting female artists and imagining alternative art histories.
