Description
Monarch butterflies are known worldwide for the incredible mass migration that brings millions of individuals to California and Mexico each winter. The North American monarch is the only butterfly that makes such a spectacular journey, with a distance of nearly 5,000 kilometers. These insects must leave each fall before the cold weather sets in, which will kill them if they linger too long.
Western monarchs have declined by more than 99 percent since the 1980s. Eastern monarchs have declined by about 80 percent.
