The American Artist Robness is a true ‘OG’ of the Crypto/NFT Art space. He has been closely involved in a number of early movements which have evolved from it, such as ‘Rare Pepes.’ However he is now considered the unofficial figurehead of the ‘Trash Art’ movement. Robness’ rowdy, outspoken yet surprisingly philosophical persona is associated with a number of iconic images and catchphrases, and he's known for firing off a barrage of social media commentary typed in all caps.
Trash is a unique visual Art movement which has evolved from Crypto/NFT Art; and now the best known. It has become apparent as the zeitgeist linchpin of the genre. Like all new conceptual or aesthetic forms it was dismissed for some time, especially by collectors who considered themselves serious arbiters and taste makers; however regardless it has gained traction and credibility. This culminated in the notorious piece ‘64-Gallon Toter’ by Robness selling recently for over a quarter million USD.
After finding my footing in the Art NFT pace with general digital work in 2020, it has developed to be focused on making commentary, thought provoking but also humorous, directly referential to the Crypto/NFT Art space and culture. The TRAITS series is fairly self-explanatory, being shorthand for ‘portraits.’ Each is painstakingly built up from thousands of small pieces relative to the subject; their personal traits. In this case Robness is created from his Tweets and statements, trash bags and Toters, junk food and packaging, emojis and symbols, cigarette butts and pills.
