This collection is to evidence to collaboration of work between Yinkore and FEED Media Art Center for artist in residency program that took place between July-August 2025. Threaded Lineage is a visual art series that pays homage to the cultural, familial, and somewhat spiritual inheritance embedded in the act of sewing. Drawing from Yinkore’s personal matrilineal story where her great grandmother passed down the skill of tailoring to her grandmother who in turn passed it to her mother.
Unfortunately, never truly being able to grasp its significance, when her mother tried to pass it down to her, she resisted. Now, she reflects on what has, in a way, been lost. This work is an act of respect and reclamation as she attempts honoring the hands that stitched before hers and grieve the gap in the lineage. Creating pieces that celebrate that history and patterns in general, she hopes to put forward this series as a gesture of reverence until she learns to sew myself. Through this series, she positions fabric and tailoring as not only functional or decorative, but sacred - especially in the context of African identity and cultural expression. These works will do all this while also, exploring how digital tools can preserve lost or at-risk cultural practices.
