From 1946 – 1956 the Volkswagen Beetle launched a significant rear-engine and rear-wheel drive trend in Western Europe’s car production. In 1968, "Herbie" The Love Bug debuted the VW Beetle in its first movie spurring its popularity even further into the 70s. The Beetle reached the peak of its popularity in 1972, has sold over 21 million cars worldwide, and is the most manufactured car ever produced. The first generation “Classic” Beetle rolled its final vehicle off the production line on July 30th, 2003. The last generation of VW Beetle was released in 2019 before being retired indefinitely.
