*note 3 (01/26/2023): San Francisco was a bust; —cranks and burnouts and scuzzies, crusties, punks, hippies, techies, yuppies, yippies, and everything in between. Jerry died while i was there. in fact, Jerry died while i was on a bus from South San Francisco after failing to find work. i went straight to Golden Gate park and weathered four days of drum circles, second-hand pot smoke, and first-hand sexual encounters.
the entire time in SF i worked three jobs, and partied continuously. looking back i have no idea how. but i burned out fast and had to leave, straggling a band of misfits behind and around me.
we struck out North towards the Pacific Crest, a century-old weather front behind us. roads closed minutes after we passed through. nearly caught in Reno. the Denny’s there a shelter from the oncoming winter.
Idaho came abrupt. the snake river and the bugs. ‘Reasonable and Prudent,’
i hadn’t been through the vast west, the Dakotas, the embers, the rotting remains of a country left behind.
in the emptiness, we found beauty.
alone we found solace.
by twenty-one i had landed in Boulder, looking forward to the climb.

*note 2 (9/19): when i was nineteen i took a 4-day greyhound bus across the country--our destination was San Francisco. i had travelled before but this was the single-longest ground-trip to date. i had a friend and all was well.
On the second day, a man in full bandages, head-to-toe--like the invisible man--got on the bus and sat directly behind us. he was a burn victim and was traveling by greyhound to get home after the release from the hospital.
we struck up a conversation, and while i no longer remember the details of the accident, fresh in mind, is the smell of the weed he was carrying. he couldn't get on or off the bus without help, and we threw in to give him a hand. we knew he smoked, but, not that he was holding.
somewhere around Nebraska, he pulled a tiny joint from his bag, and asked us to help him spark it. looking back on it, i realize now that it was laced with something, although i don't know what.
we made it to San Francisco. he got off somewhere around Arizona. i think of him often.

note: when i was in ninth grade i published my first zine. i got in serious trouble (because i said not-nice things about administrators). i didn't finish tenth grade.
yes i went back and yes i am educated and yes i taught and yes i reject most grammar for easy communication even though i taught literature (f' em). but i never lost my need to run rampant and a touch ragged.
art is dead if we don't constantly reinspect and reanalyze its meaning (to us, you can't objectively decide the 'meaning of art' to anyone else, silly. most of these images are either an answer, an obvious rejection, or some weird play on classic art.
