There are over 600 different species of ray, they are the largest group of cartilaginous fish They are also closely related to sharks and are akin to some shark species - so just like sharks, they have a skeleton made of cartilage.

Rays are crucial for the health and sustainability of our oceans: "As apex predators, sharks and rays stabilize food webs and act as a barometer for ocean health." But overfishing is killing the ocean and the rays: "Approximately 100 million sharks and rays are killed every year for their valuable fins, meat, livers and gills and nearly a third of all sharks and rays are threatened with extinction, placing them among the world’s most endangered vertebrates."

The Shark Conservation Fund (SCF) is trying to do something against this through shark and ray conservation to restore the ocean.
