Description

Theyyam is a popular ritual form of worship in the Indian state of Kerala. It is practiced mostly in the Kolathunadu region, as well as in South Canara and Kodagu of Karnataka as a living cult with traditions, rituals, and practices that are several thousand years old. Even though they are members of a lower caste in the ancient caste structure that was established by Namboothiri brahmins in Kerala, those who do Theyyam have a significant role within the art form. Theyyam is seen as a conduit to a god by the residents of these areas, and as a result, they pray to Theyyam in the hopes of receiving his blessings. Bhuta Kola is the name of a tradition that is practiced in the Mangalore area of the state of Karnataka, which is located nearby.

With the exception of the Devakoothu theyyam, most theyyams are carried out by male participants. The sole Theyyam rite that is carried out by women is called the Devakoothu. Only at the temple of Thekkumbad Kulom is this ritual carried out.

This specific theyyam is done during the temple festival, which is referred to as theyyam Kettal in the local language. This theyyam is a little bit different from the true theyyam performance that is conducted in North Kerala.
