Sisyphus symbolizes doing a vain toil, a futile labour which never comes to an end. Here in this work I have tried to depict this reality. Yet, here the rhinoceros too partakes of futility of the labour, nay, it indeed is in a worse situation than Sisyphus himself, since it is subjected to remain motionless; motion: the only thing which can lessen the “fundamental pain” of existence. Actually motion is the essence of the material world, and consequently of human being. A fundamental Pain is the origin of existence which brings about the motion as such; the Pain animates universe and existents. Therefore, in this sense, Sisyphus is indeed much more fortunate than the rhinoceros, since he is at least free to move, however hard may be his work.
