Render Cut-ups, 2023 Collection of 48x 1/1s, 2666x4000px PNG
Cut-ups is a collection of excerpts (cropped details, extreme zooms) from ongoing sketches with 3D software (Blender). Working with generative geometric models that range from hard, architectural forms to organic surfaces, I use rendering as a way to "photograph" them - both in the sense of documentation as a means of creating visual compositions.
Cut-ups don't convey a sense of the actual composition, rather they are isolated details cut out of high-resolution images. This reflects the process of "discovery" through setting up (artificial) lights and cameras, geometries and textures - only to be captivated by unexpected details and the in-between things.
It might be the optical delights of photorealistic rendering engines, used all wrong. Or finding glitches in my geometry, bad code that has produced faulty constructs that in the end turn out more interesting. Cut-ups is a collection of these visual moments.
