The Rose & Ruskin Collection. c. 1847-1853. Many scholars have speculated that the collection encompassing as many as 1000 hand coloured mezzotint engravings, being print copies of as many fake original oil paintings attributed to key figures in the Pre-Ruffalite Motherhood. These fake originals it is speculated were disposed of (destroyed) by the Royal Pre-Ruffalite Society of London UK. The destruction of the fake works was prevalent during the tenure of the Society chair, Sir Reginald Milhouse Valentine, Royal Society Chair Sitter 1895-1914. It has been noted that Sir Valentine's own collection of authenticated works markedly increased in value over this period. All of which calls into question the validity of the disposal of the unauthenticated works. "This is all speculation due to the total fictitious nature of this fanciful discourse." writes Sir William Hummerstone, in the forward to his book. The Pre-Raphaelites • Where Are They Now • I Don't Know • I Can't See Them. Mills-n-Boon Publications (1975). Sir Valentine, whose membership dates back to society's beginnings in 1881 was a paid up member till his death in 1925. AI Artist: Unknown Date: n.d.
