Gluttony

The artist duo Dadabots has been using artificial intelligence to create music since 2012. What initially began with music remix bots evolved into a sprawling practice, including 24/7 livestreams of newly generated music across multiple genres. Having generated millions of hours of music, the duo has created more music than could ever possibly be created by a completely human band. In Phat Phonk, the pair turns the dial to Phonk, the storied hip-hop subgenre which saw a revival on TikTok in 2020. Separated into 50 fragments, Phat Phonk is a mixtape with indulgent driving bass and aggressive percussion—a staple of the genre. Each artwork shows a preview of the full sound, but must be downloaded in order to be heard in their entirety. Despite their relatively short runtime, each fragment takes up between 89GB-29TB of hardware space, making the entire 25-minute mixtape incredibly resource-intensive for a listener to assemble.

Phat Phonk is delivered to listeners with the following warning from the artist:

((SURGEON GENERAL WARNING)) HAZARDOUS GORGING LEADS TO BLOAT, POSSIBLE MALFUNCTION.
