From 2015 until early 2020 i mostly lived alone. Circumstance and Happenstance and Whatnot.

i spent much of the time imagining myself as a crew member on Shackleton’s ill-fated expedition. Specifically i dreamed of the weeks stranded on Elephant Island. i set myself up with the same expectations those abandoned twenty-two men must have had. Life until the End. Not yearning, but aware.

Or worse, as Worsley, on an overnight watch among the crash of icy peaks separately trying to find the stars.

I read Milton, Proust, Tolkien, Kerouac, Cassady, Foster Wallace, Eco, Markson, Calvino, Mieville, and Melville. Gibson, Hancock, Banks—Shakespeare and Montaigne. Hemingway and Stein. Le Guin and Frost—Woolf, and Joyce; cummings—and others.

i wrote. i starved, i experimented. i learned.

bu mostly i painted.
