Description

Oxum is a goddess of the Afro-Brazilian candomblé pantheon, the Orixá of beauty and mediumship. A song once said that everyone born in Salvador is her child. In the piece the subway stations of the state capital of Bahia are mixed with candomblé orixás from the Yorubá and Bantu nations. It is ancestry mixed into everyday life, the sacred inhabiting the transits. The hereditary captaincies in colonial Brazil are fictions of borders in an INDIGENOUS territory. Shields, colonizers, enslaved civilizations, but never silenced. A conch - symbol of commerce and divination, the Lacerda elevator, the map of Africa, peppers and waterfalls, the subway walkways bring Afrofuturism into the now.
