Painted at Giverny during the First World War, as Monet turned his garden pond into the subject of his final decade. The Rockefellers bought it in 1956 on the advice of MoMA's director Alfred Barr, from a dealer who had acquired it from Monet's own son. In 2018 it sold at Christie's New York for $84.7 million after a bidding war lasting more than ten minutes, at the time, a record for Monet at auction.
