Inspired by the first verse of Paul Verlaine’s poem “Je devine, à travers un murmure” (1874), William Mapan plays with the notion of a whisper and invites us into a digital ethereal world.

Conjuring something that is faint yet powerful, he titles the work Murmures d’un Carré (Whispers of a Square) paying tribute to the core building block of the digital space – a pixel. As the smallest digital unit, a pixel associated with the basics of geometry takes on the form of a ghostly presence within the series. Mapan uses the pixel in a delicate manner to build transparency and layers of tones. Throughout the compositions, lines form to evoke the perception of a drawing.
