Mon Alphabet en Signes (2024) is a series of AI-generated texts describing small wooden tiles taken from a French abecedarium toy. Each of the 26 tiles contains a word with a pictogram, resembling illustrations of the Saussurean “signifier” and “signified.” Images of the tiles are interpreted by computer-vision software designed to detect and describe the semantic content of images in natural language. The software may succeed or fail to do so on multiple levels, as revealed by the generated text, which points to the capabilities, shortcomings, and biases of technologies purporting to detect and produce semantic meaning.
