Melusine is a medieval French tale of love, secrecy, and transformation. Cursed to take the form of a serpent from the waist down every Saturday, she marries Raymond on the condition that he never sees her on that day. For years she builds his fortunes, bears children, and raises castles across Poitou, until suspicion drives Raymond to break his vow. Peeking into her bath, he discovers her serpent form—an act that exposes the truth and ends their life together. In many versions, Melusine becomes a winged serpent and departs, returning only to mourn the deaths of her descendants, forever suspended between woman, myth, and curse.
