Can art be born from tragedy?

Ehrlich's 2018 series, "Out of the Fire, Abstract Truth" captures scarred earth, burned cars and demolished homes in the wake of the Woolsey Malibu fire. Destruction is set against abstract patterns and textures of melted metal and dilapidated paint, forming otherworldly - even celestial or cell-like - wonders. Each image is unearthed as a palimpsest or pentimento.
