Description

Oshun is the goddess of fertility, sensuality, and love in the Yoruba religion. She is the Queen of all rivers and exercises her power over fresh water, without which life on Earth would be impossible. She is called Ìyálóòde (Iyalode) or tribal chief, a title given to the most important woman in the community for her achievements. In Cuba, this goddess was syncretized with one of the invocations of the Virgin Mary of the Catholic Church: the Lady of Charity of El Cobre (Patron Saint of Cuba). This syncretism created an amalgamation of traditions and customs that continue today and also serve as the foundation for the creation of this work in which I represent, in an allegory of Plato's Myth of the Cave, the contrast between the color that divinity provides us and the opacity of our existence on this plane. In the pictorial representations of the Virgin of Charity, there is a headband with a Latin phrase: "Mater caritatis in fluctibus maris ambulavit" (Mother of Charity who walked the path of stormy seas). In my work, it remains blank as an opportunity to give it a name and the characteristics that we understand from our own feelings.
