before there was a heaven with teeth, there was only the threshold.

something stood there, neither fallen nor divine, carrying no name and belonging to no world.

a halo rested above its head, though it had not yet been crowned. Blue flowers grew where no earth could be found, their roots winding through the darkness as if they remembered a garden that had never existed.

it waited at the edge of heaven, listening. perhaps it was waiting to be welcomed in. perhaps it was waiting for something to come out.

no one knows how long it remained there. but the creature had already begun to change.

something had touched it from the other side of the threshold; something warm, something beautiful, something that should not have been there.

and for the first time, it opened its eyes.
