SAPPHIRE: This picture is part of “La Danza”, a photography series created to freeze in time the astonishing dance and colours displayed by hummingbirds while nurturing themselves. This was done through the use of a high-speed photography technique. Never forget that “Nature has many surprises for those who wait on her” (W.H. Hudson, 1893). About the particular species depicted: The Gilded Hummingbird (Hylocharis chrysura) is a South American species that can be found in gardens, plantations, savannas and forest edges. It lives in areas of Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. It feeds mainly on nectar of flowering native and introduced plants. Its song is a repeated high-pitched trill and its call is a short dry “trrrt”.
