Description

256 algorithmic drawings of the same flower

This system translates color into movement. A swarm of drawing particles, like virtual pencils, are guided by the color values of the pixels in an input image. The formulas performing the conversion put into play many parameters. The space of possibilities of the system is enormous, the variety of drawings endless. 256 is just a small arbitrary sample.

This work can be seen as a playful reflection on the concept of “style”, which is so essential to our ideas about art and (human) artists. This short program can paint the same image on infinitely many “styles” – each of them reducible to a simple combination of mathematical parameters.

The input image is a photo of a yellow hypericum flower I took during a holiday in the Argentinean Patagonia, near Bariloche, in 2016.

This is a new iteration of a generative exploration from 2016. You can see it at https://flickr.com/photos/solaas/albums/72157670059223206
