Handdraw
Description

A figurative work hand-painted on canvas with Derwent Inktense colored pencils. In front of a curtain formed by hanging vertical forms, figures appearing to come from different worlds are grouped together: a woman in traditional clothing with a red veil; a young woman in a classic grey dress; a large, bearded male head watching them from above; and a naked figure with his back turned, his jacket draped over his shoulder. The composition is built upon a curtain created by vertical forms hanging from above; these forms both weave the background and seem to separate the figures into different layers of time and space. Within the warm palette dominated by earthy tones, the red veil and the blue-grey fabric stand out as two strong color accents that create balance. Inktense's character is defining in the technique: the paint, which is drawn like a pencil when dry and becomes saturated like ink when water is applied, brings together both clear contour lines and fluid, watercolor-like transitions on the same surface. The vertical forms in the background are rendered with thin, dry lines, while the shadows of the fabrics are painted with wet, dense passages. The expressions and shading on the faces are hand-layered. Palette: earthy brown, oxide yellow, crimson red, slate blue, moss green.
