BIO: Born in 1977, New York-based GenX artist GAWD grew up influenced by the work of Haring and Warhol and the politics of punk/hardcore music. With roots creating graffiti in the late 1990s followed by the Lowbrow Art movement - published in 2012 alongside other Pop Surrealist digital artists - GAWD adopted the pseudonym in 2014 creating evocative work that brings the street to the studio (and now the blockchain) through paint, typography, pop imagery, and punk sensibility. GAWD's repurposing of highbrow fashion and luxury imagery (serving as connective cultural tissue) colliding with snarky lowbrow typography fuels bold, brash social commentary with a nihilistic bent. Each work challenges us to question ourselves, the world around us, and our place in it.
