Fulcrum: A pivot point or something that plays a central role in or is in the center of a situation or activity.

Umwelt: A theory which states that the mind and the world are inseparable because it is the mind that interprets the world for the organism.

FULCR/UM\WELT considers self-identity and the role of habits, profession and how the tools we use guide our perspective of the world around us. With the increasing integration of Machine Learning in our lives, personalized fine-tuned data, surveillance and an ever-present online connection; an external mind is formed and meshes with our local umwelt.

FULCR/UM\WELT is based on Les Costumes Grotesques Et Les Metiers a series of 97 engravings by Nicolas de Larmessin (c. 1645-1725). The work illustrates characters made up of the tools and materials of their trades. In FULCR/UM\WELT, these engravings are reimagined with a chain of machine learning algorithms and custom painting software. A fulcrum point shifting between a local and remote umwelt.
