Description

Basquiat, the shy boy with the crooked smile from Brooklyn, died for our sins. King Basquiat was a unique figure in the art world. Infusing street art and high art to create works that challenged not only the mainstream art world but also institutional racism and modern colonialism. King Basquiat was raised by the rough streets of NYC in the late 70’s - inscribing his truths on walls with cynical “slogans”, and later on, taking the same punk attitude into galleries of “high art”. He was there when the NY graffiti movement was born, in dark alleyways, stinky punk and hiphop clubs and drug infested city. He took it all in and let it all out on canvases, walls, wood panels, doors, paper and anything he could find. And with his massive output and unmatched talent, he rose to the top of the 80’s art scene in NY and is considered, to this day, over 3 decades after his untimely death, as one of the greatest modern American artists.
