FANTASY 1980 is a tribute to the formative years of fantasy, capturing the nostalgic essence of the late 1970s and early 1980s when TSR's Dungeons & Dragons was sparking the creativity of a generation. This art project seeks to evoke the unique flavor and feel of that era's media and illustrations, when the quality of print, film, and television was intriguingly imperfect—grainy, low-resolution, and full of character.
The image generation process involves a variable prompt that randomly selects from over forty entities, with a weighted preference for more common beings—meaning a Hobgoblin will appear before a Dragon. These images are created using the Juggernaut XL 8 Stable Diffusion Model with a limited number of sampling steps, resulting in visuals that echo the slightly blurred, dreamlike quality of the time.
FANTASY 1980 meticulously fine-tunes all these elements to reflect the aesthetics and spirit of early fantasy media, serving as a heartfelt homage to the brilliant creators and the visionary distributors who brought this imaginative world to life.
