Description

"fabrique" is a generative art project that merges traditional repoussé and relief art forms with modern coding techniques.

Inspired by a visit to Florence and the Gates of Paradise, I decided to delve into the ancient art forms of repoussé and relief, aiming to stay true to their original approaches while using contemporary, but basic digital tools - only p5.js (without shaders or webgl). This exploration involved experimenting with various material effects, including metals, ceramics, paper, and plaster, each with its unique textures and shadows.

The project's early trials focused on creating a particle flow to resemble vine patterns commonly found in relief art, using perlin noise for this purpose. I tried to integrate the concept of "time is a flat circle" into the artwork, representing the phases of life - youth, middle age, and twilight years - against various backdrops symbolizing the materials' textures.

The creation of 93 distinct palettes was crucial for achieving the right textures and colors for each material type. Have used a technique to add depth and create repoussé/relief effects by rendering a final image on a new layer and then selectively removing parts of it, applying shadow to create the illusion of troughs and crests. The project uses unique texture backgrounds for each material, such as fabric for threads and a reed-like appearance for paper, contributing to the distinctiveness of each piece.

Rendered in 2.39 aspect ratio, one can trigger the golden aspect ratio of 1.618 or 1- featuring a live view option. The artworks were initially planned to be released as a 5 ACT series, each with a specific render type, unique palette, and style. This has been combined to have a single release and a smaller number of mints.
