Description

Oculus Temporis frames the inevitable triumph of organic matter over rigid human devotion, reducing a sacred space to its elemental textures of light and sediment.

Location History:

The history of Santa Maria della Grotta spans millennia. Originally a Punic necropolis in the 4th century BC and later a Roman quarry, the site was eventually adapted by early Christians and monks. The structure captured in this photograph stems from a 1712 Jesuit project that integrated a semi-subterranean Baroque church directly into these ancient caves. This deep-rock construction creates the damp microclimate responsible for the aggressive algae growth seen on the walls. The church remained an active place of worship until 1968, when structural damage from an earthquake forced its permanent closure.
