Carmela scanned the crowd of her people, who waited on the barbaric act. Her eyes met with her trainer, Rubi, who gestured as though silently urging her to use what she had been taught. Carmela closed her eyes, remembering the inescapable rite of passage.

“He deserves it,” Carmela thought. The sand beneath her feet shifted ever so slightly. Energy pooled from farthest reaches of the know realms, finding a home inside her.

Carmela tapped into the sorrow from her parents' death and slowed her breathing. A cool wind grazed her hair. Fiery green lit up the skeleton on her staff as a mist enveloped her. Magic awoke nearby lanterns and briefly overpowered her, shaking her concentration.
