Heliopetes americanus is a species in the family Hesperiidae. It is a neotropical spread-winged skipper butterfly known in English as “American Checkered skipper”, due to its peculiar wings pattern (visible in the dorsal surface) that resembles a checkerboard. Its common name in Spanish is “Ajedrezada de lunar”. Photograph taken in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
