3. Manipulated images serve to dismantle the codified ways in which we receive and create meaning. These edited forms subvert the initial expectation of what is known, suspending viewers in a state of recognition and confusion. Inside jokes are prevalent but are inevitably lost on the viewer, as works are made for the artists own amusement. This playful irreverence may be subversive to the seriousness of the white cube but is nevertheless reliant on its structure of authority to allow viewers a space to contemplate and therefore activate works by dismantling an immediate understanding of what is seen—creating meaning, even if works are intentionally meaningless.
