Description

Flying Gull is some of the earliest motion picture footage still on archive. Pre-dating the work done by Muybridge with humans, horses, and other animals, Etienne-Jules Marey began his studies by attempting to capture birds in flight. In 1870 he captured this footage of a gull in flight. The footage is actually closer to a modern gif than video as we know it now, compose of sequenced photographs played back at a low frame rate. I have thus presented it as such, with an attempt to modernize Marey's goal of analyzing the movement of the subject.
