Description

Digital Sketches is a generative series built on the same compositional and color logic as Mechanical Drawings. Where Mechanical Drawings are large, plotted works on paper, Digital Sketches are smaller, screen-based works that emulate the drawing process of a plotter.

Four colors are selected from a fixed palette of colored pencil references and blended across a grid of cells that varies in shape and orientation. Each cell's color is defined by a cross-hatching system, where the line density for each color determines its contribution to the final mixture.

The initial state of the artwork displays each composition as smooth, mathematically precise blends between the selected colors. Clicking the artwork toggles between this blended view and an animated drawing sequence, where the cross-hatched version of the artwork is plotted line by line in the same optimized order as Mechanical Drawings. The animation can be paused, restarted, or run at different speeds, allowing the artwork to be examined as a process unfolding over time.

Digital Sketches brings the viewer into the studio to experience a simulation of the plotting choreography. It's a way of sharing the joy of watching a plotter build a drawing one stroke at a time, highlighting the drawing process itself.
