The term "Degen" here refers to the degeneracy of energy states in the canonical quantum particle-in-a-box (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degenerate_energy_levels). The patterns inscribed in the walls of a particular box is governed by the quantum numbers nx, ny, nz chosen randomly during the mint.

These inscribed patterns carve holes in the box, allowing energetic charged particles to flow out. In some rare cases, the state remains fully quantized and all the energy is confined to the inside of the box.
